Character Information

Name: Spinel
Canon: Steven Universe
Canon Point: Post Steven Universe the Movie
OU/AU/CRAU/OC: OU
Age: Somewhere between 7,000 and 8,000 years old

World Information:
Spinel was a homeworld gem. Homeworld can be read about in detail here. Of note, while Spinel had visited Earth, she did not have the opportunity to learn about it or humans that live there.
5,752 years ago, the rebellion on Earth was stopped by the Diamond Authority.

Personal History: (Spoiler warning)
After Pink Diamond irreversibly damaged her first Pearl in an angry outburst approximately 8,000 years ago, she was gifted with two new gems to serve as her companions. The first was a Pearl to act as a personal assistant, and the second was a perfectly-cut, pink Spinel to entertain her as a playmate. A special private garden was constructed for Pink Diamond and her Spinel to use as a playground on the floating remains of a conquered planet. There, they used to play for hours at a time. Spinel did all she could to entertain her Diamond while having fun herself, and as the centuries passed, Pink Diamond became bored of her without Spinel realizing it. She had, in a sense, outgrown her "little playmate".
Since before Spinel was given to Pink Diamond, she had wanted to have a colony of her own in the Gem Empire (a denial of that desire had caused the outburst that damaged her first Pearl). One day, her wish came true when Yellow and Blue Diamond contacted Pink at the garden to tell her she could have her own colony on Earth. On her way to leave the garden, Pink Diamond stopped and instructed Spinel to play a new game with her. Pink Diamond told her to stand very still in the garden, then walked to the warp pad and vanished from sight.
In Gem society, the word of a Diamond is followed as a strict order, and disobedience is not tolerated. So Spinel waited happily to please Pink, night after night under an endless sky of stars in space. She waited as 6,000 years passed. Spinel did not move from the same spot Pink told her to stand, allowing the garden to grow wild, and partially over her body, before dying from neglect. Still, she waited frozen in place...until a message was broadcast across the galaxies to announce the end of the Gem Empire. The story broadcast told of Pink Diamond fleeing to Earth where she took up a new life with new friends, fell in love, and gave up her life to bring her son into the world. Her son had brought a new age of peace to the universe. Hearing this message to the universe from Steven Universe and the Diamond Authority (White, Blue, and Yellow), Spinel was overcome with grief. Her light form dissipated as if she had been physically damaged, and once her gem had time to repair her light body, she came back in a new physical form that reflected her intense emotional trauma. (Of note: This detail was confirmed by the show's creator). Filled with pain and anger, she used the warp pad to leave the garden and travelled to homeworld. She gathered tools for a plan, and immediately departed to Earth while listening to the broadcast on loop.
Spinel went on the attack upon her arrival on Earth and focused on the strangers that Pink Diamond had chosen over her including the savior of the galaxy and the Crystal Gems. Using a Gem Rejuvenator, she cut through the Crystal Gems in one fell blow, and attacked Steven. Not surprised that he wasn't also poofed (his physical form did not dissipate), Spinel still had essentially short circuited his gem, and allowed Steven to overpower her and strike her down with the rejuvenator instead.
After a spell, all of the gems emerged in their original forms with no memory of their lives and began acting as they were programmed...including Spinel. Back in her original state, she could not be forced or coerced into stopping the injector. Spinel latched onto Steven instantly, as he carries Pink Diamond's gem, and acted as his 'new best friend' while Steven tried to make sense of the damage she had done. She offered helpful advice on how to look at the problem without realizing she had caused it, and insisted on staying at his side. While tagging along with Steven as he worked to recover his friends' memories and his own powers, Spinel was generally ignored. As it continued and worsened, Spinel's memory was jogged as the feeling of being left out and ignored coincided with her memories of Pink Diamond. She ran away, struggling with the emotions flooding back into her, and Steven found her at the warp pad. Together, they travelled to the garden where she recovered the last of her memories and became who she had been at the start of her attack. This time, she succumbed to guilt and shame rather than her rage, and Steven coaxed her into returning to Earth with him.
Believing Steven to now be her friend, Spinel called off her injector at his request. A moment later, she felt ignored as Steven focused on the last of the Crystal Gems yet to be healed. Spinel began to panic as she felt she would be abandoned again, the mere thought of it shaking her. Finding the rejuvenator had been in Steven's pocket, Spinel misread the situation and assumed Steven had deceived her and would reset her when her guard was down now that the threat of her injector was over. She called the injector to resume, and tried to goad Steven into attacking her. He refused, breaking the rejuvenator, and Garnet recovered in the midst of the confrontation. Spinel watched Steven reunite with the three Gems that had been closest to Pink Diamond, and she tried to attack. Fended off this time, she retreated to the top of the injector and commanded it to dump the entire poisonous cargo into the Earth. It would no longer kill the planet, but did bigger damage in the immediate area, including breaking the ground through Beach City.
Steven chased after her, and she attacked. Dangling him off the edge, they talked, and he regained his powers in a moment of clarity. Powers regained, Spinel attacked him again furiously, and while he attempted to talk her down, she did not relent until she had spent some of her rage and uncovered her own fear. The injector was damaged, and as Steven approached Spinel, it exploded. Saved from the explosion by Steven, Spinel was left ashamed and truly remorseful. Realizing she had no place on Earth, she was intending to leave with the desire to make herself a good friend. As she spoke with Steven, the Diamond Authority arrived. Spinel hid, until Steven called her out to present to the Diamonds. Identified as one of Pink Diamond's lost treasures, she was taken by the Diamonds back to Homeworld to live with them in the palace.

Personality:
At her core, Spinel is a good-hearted gem that wants others to be happy and likes to play. However, because of the cruel abandonment she experienced, Spinel has lost some of her cheer and the ability to regulate her emotions so that she feels them too intensely to control at times. She harbors an anger unlike anything she had known in her previous life with Pink Diamond, and while lessened, it shamefully remains. Her own self worth had been shattered, believing herself unworthy of love or perhaps even existing. Even her old self was not good enough, thinking that her nativity contributed to deserving her abandonment (or in her words being 'stupid'). This perception of herself, prior and current, colors the actions of others and makes it difficult for her to trust that there is no ulterior motive or lack of loyalty. She is fearful of being hurt again, and would go to extraordinary lengths to avoid abandonment, real or perceived.
Her purpose was to entertain, but being funny requires a level of wit that Spinel demonstrated many times over. Spinel recognized Steven as his own entity rather than some piece of Pink Diamond or the next Pink Diamond as confused many other gems, she planned revenge accounting for his unique hybrid qualities with old Gem technology, adapted her plan when things didn't go the way she intended, and proposed a logical alternative explanation that fit her perception of events off the cuff. Moreover, she adapted her gem powers to fighting when Spinel was never designed to be able to fight in the first place without training and without any prior experience.
After the experiences she went through on Earth, Spinel recognizes some of her flaws honestly. She knows that if she wants to succeed in building friendships, she will have to work to make it happen. While still potentially volatile, she is not as angry as she began.

Key themes:
Recovery from Trauma (Specifically that someone has to want to get better, and that even someone struggling deserves love)

Main Motivation:
Friendship. Spinel was made for the sole purpose of being a best friend to Pink Diamond, and she still craves being close to someone. All she wants is to make others smile and laugh.

Skills:
>Musical Expression: All gems are capable of singing a new song to express their feelings without prior consideration. It comes naturally, and more impressive is the way gems can use it to resonate with another gem. A second gem listening to the first can join in to harmonize, and acts as a means of emotional connection. Whether it be Diamonds or Pearls, all gems can use this social mechanism. Similarly, all gems have the ability to dance, though the style varies between gems.

>Light Body: All gems consist of a literal gemstone, and the body seen projected around it is a light form that does have mass. This light form allows them to interact with the world physically, and will change appearance for reasons of will (see Shapeshifting) or due to mental/emotional changes over their lifetime. Permanent changes to the light body only occur after a gem’s light form has been forcibly dissipated. They can consciously influence how they reform, such as altering clothing style, but to a limited degree. Time to heal the light form varies from gem to gem, and personality plays into this in that a brash gem will reform within a minute and a meticulous one can take two weeks to make choices. Of note, if a gemstone is contained in a space too small to reform, the gem cannot do so due to impending reinjury.

>Shapeshifting: All gems are capable of shapeshifting to look entirely different except for coloration of their bodies. They cannot alter their gemstone in this process. This skill is variable between gems in how talented one can be, and how long they can sustain the change depends on how severe the change as well as skill. Spinel did not change to look like another being (ie copy the appearance of a human, other gem, or animal as Amethyst does frequently), so her skill is assumed to be average.

>Gemstone Storage: All gems can store a number of items within their gemstones, essentially absorbing them rather than carrying them. They can hold organic material that is inanimate, and in rare cases, bring another living being into their gem. Retrieval of stored items is a conscious act. The amount of items a gem can store varies in the way skills of shapeshifting vary. Pearl, for example, can store a warehouse worth of items, while other gems are shown to only have a few items. Spinel is assumed to have below average to average storage due to her station not requiring her to rely on any physical objects. Attempts to store above one’s limit results in feelings of illness for a gem.

>Gemstone Weapon: All gems are capable of summoning a weapon unique to themselves. Even a Pearl can create a weapon. The weapons are physical and affect physical and light matter the same way (ie a sword will cut stone or a light form arm). Spinel’s weapon is not yet known and this will be updated if it is ever revealed in canon.

>Strength: All gems have strength well above that of a human. Spinel is shown as capable of breaking stone with a quick punch, and with a similar attack, sends Steven (who has gemlike durability) flying yards away.

>Durability: As much as she can dish out, Spinel can take hits without her light form being disrupted. It still causes pain, and maintaining her form under the force will require energy. Spinel’s unique powers (see Elasticity) make her better at absorbing blunt forces than other gems. Piercing damage however remains a high threat, and stab that would be fatal to a human will force her light body to dissipate for repairs. While all gems try to protect their gemstones, it is a strike to the gemstone that will be fatal. Shattering the gemstone will kill a gem, and the crystals are as vulnerable as Earth gemstones (side note, shattering a Diamond would require extra measures). It is possible to crush a gem’s light form and gemstone simultaneously, such as by dropping a severely heavy object on the gem. If a gemstone is cracked but not broken through, the light body begins to show symptoms with glitches and deformations. A severe enough crack causes worsening projection of the body until the gem is completely immobile. Cracks can only be healed by a gem gifted with healing powers (such as Pink Diamond or her son Steven).

>Independent Existence: Gems do not require food, sleep, air, or other sustenance to continue their lives. This is potentially due to the high energy cost of making each gem. Incubation of a gem literally robs all life sustaining properties from that patch of ground and will not recover even after thousands of years. Of note, a gem can choose to sleep (and dream) or eat for enjoyment, but only some gems find food pleasurable (as they feel it moving through their light body for the whole process).

>Gravity Adjustment: Essentially instinctual and not volitional in any way, gems naturally adjust their mass to maintain a consistent level of mobility dependent on air pressure and gravity. Whether walking on Earth or the Moon, their motions remain the same.

>Bubble Creation: All gems can create bubbles, though this skill can be greater for some gems. These bubbles are independently sustaining empty spheres that can be used to contain other gems to prevent reformation of the light body. The bubbles can be sent back to locations to which a gem is tied, though the process of a gem linking to a physical place was not revealed in canon. Bubbles can be made empty for silly uses such as juggling, used to cover fists for fighting, or used to carry something a gem doesn’t want to physically touch. Spinel can make a bubble as large as a ball, and her bubbles are pink colored.

> Gem Light: All gems can shine a cone of light from their gem like a flashlight with a fair range (ie illuminate within a large room).

>Fusion: Two gemstones can link to create one light body. If the gems are the same type such as in the case of two Rubies, the resulting fusion looks and feels like the original gems in both inner and outer aspects, but is larger in mass and generally stronger. Two different gems fusing will create a new identity that combines strengths of both gems and can unlock new powers and weapons while increasing size and strength. Fusion can only be achieved when two gems are synchronized (often by dancing together or sharing emotional bonding), and lasts only as long as the two gems that created it can work in harmony. Spinel has never fused, and while capable physically speaking, would not know how to fuse.

>Elasticity: Unique to Spinel, her light form is elastic in the same manner as Mr. Fantastic. She can volitionally stretch and deform her body, bounce herself to incredible heights, and build up inertia to increase her strength in melee attacks. The elasticity can be turned back against her, as she has been stretched and flung by her own limbs. At her currently known peak, Spinel can stretch an arm across a shouting distance without strain (appeared to be under a quarter mile), stretch up an incline and wrap around the height of a lighthouse, flatten herself to weave like a shadow on the ground, partially accordion herself downwards to leap onto the top of a modest skyscraper, temporarily increase the size of her whole or part of her body, and create a massive fist with her arm wound in a coil that can punch a crater into a massive crystal.

>Scythe Fighting: Despite her lack of training, Spinel was able to utilize the Gem Rejuvenator (styled as a scythe) in a fight as if she had always wielded it. Speculation may be that Spinel has a similar natural weapon, and it is assumed she would need to train with other styles of weapons to use them effectively at all.

>Juggling and Acrobatics: As an entertainer, Spinel can juggle, flip around, and balance well. She tends to be very sneaky, slipping behind those she wants to entertain for comedic effect. The agility she has used as an entertainer makes her a difficult target to hit in a fight so long as she keeps her focus.

Item:
The rejuvenator she used in the movie. The device collapses into a small handle that she can store inside her gem. When activated, the handle telescopes into a staff with a crystal at the top and extends a light scythe blade. The blade will only cut through forms of light, and cannot cut physical matter. Run through a Gem’s light body, the scythe resets a Gem to her base programmed state by inducing amnesia. The amnesia can be reversed by new experiences that are similar to previous experiences that shaped who they became. The rejuvenator was broken at the shaft and is potentially repairable. Without repairs, it’s a trinket.

Notes:
While Spinel is still a work in progress in her recovery, she will be striving to redeem herself.

I would like to ask in the event that Spinel is poofed (her light form is dissipated), what might happen to her SCA? Is there some way it could attach itself to her gemstone instead?
